I have a sink full of dishes and a mountain of clothes hiding behind a closed door. I can’t count the times I’ve needed to clean up before my husband gets home from work but played with my son instead. The moments I tell my friends I’m a horrible mom because ___ and they say they’ve done it too. These are the moments we don’t always show off but the ones that need to be shared. We all live in laundry but what that means is up to you.

$5 Dining Chair Makeover
($80 total cost)
While waiting for my new dining chairs to come back in stock (dang shipping delay nightmare of 2022) I realized I couldn't "wait" any longer for an update on my chairs, I had upholstered beige chairs that I loved but my kids destroyed and they were impossible to get or keep clean.
I took to marketplace apps on the hunt to find a similar looking chair to the ones I’ll be getting and I wanted to try my first furniture flip! I found these old chairs for $20 for 4 so at $5 a chair I couldn’t pass that up!
I had the sander and sandpaper on hand so it came to about $90 for the rest of the supplies, I actually had 3/4 of a can of chalk paint already so I ended up not even needing the new can of it.
This cost me $60 in supplies and $20 for chairs...
I also have almost all of the polyurethane so in reality this project costs even less than this since I can use that one so many more things, same with the paint brushes.
The work
I gave them all a light sand with a 60 and 120 grit sandpaper, I didn’t need to get them to raw wood since I was going to paint them.
If I was going to stain them I would have to strip the varnish and sand to raw wood.
Vacuum and wipe with a tac cloth when finished sanding
I used a spray primer to prime the chairs
I used a chalk paint (which you don’t have to sand or prime before using but I was planning to use a cabinet enamel and spray it but my sprayer wasn’t working so I to change the plan)
I used a round nylon/polyester blend brush and worked top to bottom, starting on the spindles then seat and last the legs.
I found that chalk paint was very forgiving and so easy to work with truly amazing for a beginning furniture project.
After one coat I was very happy with the coverage and look but did decided to do a second one coat to really make it look more modern than farmhouse, you could see the brush strokes with one coat and two coats was almost flawless.
One coat
Two coats
With chalk paint you don’t have to add a top coat BUT on chairs or a piece that you will use and have to clean often you need to have a protective finish or the paint will wipe off with cleaning and does sort of scratch.
I used a matte polyurethane because I didn’t want them to be shiny, I also saw someone do a similar project and loved the finish of chalk paint with a matte top coat. It has a slight sheen but not a strong as satin or gloss.
Before polyurethane
I used a white China bristle brush and I was a little worried that it was going to be really bad because it goes on and looks very streaky and thick.
But you can see when it dries it levels out and honestly looks incredible. It makes the finish look “hard” and also brought out some of the natural wood grain look and brush strokes which I really liked.
Once it was completely dried I did do a second coat of polyurethane on the seat and legs because I know those will get the most use.
Here you can see a side by side of before the polyurethane and after, I am so happy I did the matte and I loved that it deepened the color a bit because with was a little to grey with just the chalk paint.
The After
I am so happy with this project and I absolutely love how these chairs turned out! For under $100 I really think this is project for anyone that is looking for an easy update to your home.
Yes we also bought two new leather chairs for the head of the table from marketplace (offer up) and love how this room looks now.

Girl's Nursery Makeover Pt.1 Pink Bead Board I've done my fair share of board/batten projects with my husband, Scott, by now but we have yet to work with beadboard and I really wanted this room to feel very feminine and feel like a room you would see in a victorian/craftsman home 100 years ago (but a little more modern). We just finished up a boy's room makeover for our son's who are now sharing a room, this was our youngest sons nursery, and that room has a dark green board/batten throughout; I wanted these two rooms to feel similar and that they belong next to each other but still have very different personalities and choosing to go with beadboard the same height as their board/batten really achieved my goal. (our sons room and this room are next to each other so you see them side by side in our hallway) When I was researching how to do all the beadboard things I struggled to find a lot of truly helpful post describing areas like corners, top trim placement and pai...
DIY Mudroom Built In/Hall Tree with a Bench & Drawers When we moved into our home (going on 4 years ago now) I had a vision for this little wall from the start. I knew I wanted a "mudroom" but being in California those don't exist, new builds are starting to incorporate them but not to the grandness of those beautiful country homes gracing our feeds lately. If you are looking for that craftsman/farmhouse charm of a place to hang your coat or sit down to put your shoes on and lack a dedicated room but have a wall...this is the tutorial for you! You can absolutely change this to fit your needs or space, don't have room for a bench just extend the board and batten to the floor and you can still have a coat hook wall. Materials: 2x4's : frame for bench cabinet 1/4 inch plywood : board backing 3/4 inch plywood : bench cabinet and drawers 3 1/2 inch common board strips : horizontal "batten" and trim piece for the bottom of benc...
What we started with: Toddler Boy Room Makeover (all items used in this room are linked under their category) Why a "grown up" kids room you ask? When I think of a child's room I instantly think back to my childhood rooms. Bright colors and character wallpaper or decals placed thoughtlessly on the walls, plastic tables and chairs (nothing wrong them they clean up great!), character sheets and comforters that I vividly remember never being soft enough and always cold, it was a room I would get bored of very very fast and want to re decorate. (That could also just be a me thing lol!) I do remember how much my Mom loved doing rooms for me and I remember her always being so happy to re do them when I got an itch to change things up (if it was something we could afford at the time). So, when I started planning out my son's new room for him and his brother to share I really dug deep to figure out how I could make this room something that can last through childhood and ma...
